Press Release

June 15th, 2011,  Washington D.C.

The LAB Ride organizers announce that the beneficiary of the 2011 ride will be The Ocular Melanoma Foundation. http://www.ocularmelanoma.org

Founded in 2003, The Ocular Melanoma Foundation, or OMF, is dedicated to increasing awareness, enhancing education and research and providing advocacy among both patients and health care professionals.

In November of 2009, OMF brought together over 40 of the top researchers and clinicians in the field of the ocular melanoma for the first annual Ocular Melanoma Scientific Working Group. Goals for this working group included identifying research priorities and increasing collaboration in order to improve patient outcomes. The hope is that this group will continue to work closely together and meet on a yearly basis in order to tackle this most deadly of cancers.

The LAB Ride is proud to donate the money raised in this years ride to The Ocular Melanoma Foundation.

Bike Route - click to view

The LAB Ride is roughly a 30-mile bike ride, intended for family fun.  This year’s event will be from the National Mall in Washington D.C.   Some of the ride highlights include a lap around the National Mall, with views of the U.S Capital building, the Smithsonian, Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Kennedy Center.  Riders will pedal up the Capital Crescent Trail along the Potomac River and through beautiful mid-Atlantic forests to Rockville Maryland.  It is a moderate route, capable of being ridden by the entry-level cyclists.

In keeping with the “Spirit” of the LAB Ride, every rider must get donations from 10 sponsors.” These sponsors may give any amount they desire in the form of check, cash or electronic contributions. Any cash or checks can be turned in during Check In, the morning of the ride.

Riders will receive refreshments at the turn around point, emergency support throughout the ride, a unique rider “packet” and a BBQ lunch at the end of the ride.

Any rider may choose to participate in only half of the ride. There is a halfway rest stop in Bethesda MD, with convenient access to a Metro Station.  From that station, you can train home, or train to the Rockville stop and ride another 2 miles to the event party.

Traveling to Washington D.C. and wish to rent a bike? No problem! The Nations Capital has a bike share program.  These three speed bikes are fantastic rides, and can be picked up and returned at lots of locations all over D.C. The costs are modest, with a $5 membership fee, and a daily fee.  Check out this link to learn more http://www.capitalbikeshare.com/.

A BBQ will follow the ride at the Byrne House in Rockville MD.  There is a short two mile ride from the Byrne House to the Rockville Metro station, where riders can return to D.C. Don’t worry, bikes can be taken on Metro on weekends.
