On behalf of OMF, I can’t thank you enough for organizing the LAB Ride and for including Katherine and me in such a fun and special event yesterday. I’m certainly still feeling the ‘burn’ from the 5k + 25 mi bike, but the BBQ and fellowship made up for it.
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who rode and THANK YOU for your support of OM advocacy!

Hi all, the LAB Ride is now less than 1 week away. We are really looking forward to a great ride with good friends and family. I wanted to remind everyone of a couple of things this close to the ride.
First, We are raising funds for the Ocular Melanoma Foundation. Our goal is that every rider can bring in about $200 in sponsors. Last year, we well surpassed this goal, with less than 30 riders bringing in over $6,000. If every rider can meet our base goal we can really make a difference for our charity organization. Please help us help this great foundation.
Second, the ride logistics. We will meet at the Smithsonian Metro Station, Mall side, on Saturday September 24. Our goal is to leave on the ride around 10 am; it would be great to get there early. The first 5 or so miles will be an easy roll, and we will keep everyone together. After that you are free to ride as you like. There is a break at about 15 miles in Bethesda where we will have drinks and snacks and the like. The whole ride is about 30 miles and we expect everyone to finish around 1pm. The end of the ride is at the Byrne House, in Rockville where we will host a BBQ. Post BBQ, there is an easy 2 mile ride from the Byrne House to the Rockville Metro station for points in the DC area.
Third, please let us know if you are coming with people who haven’t signed up, or if you will not make it. We are trying to plan for the logistics of the event and would love have a good count of folks attending.
Thanks so much for your support, and helping make this a great event. Looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday.
Hi all. The LAB Ride is now only 3 weeks away. We are really looking forward to seeing you all on September 24 here in Washington D.C. I wanted to highlight a couple of reminders for you. First, this is a fundraising ride. We are raising funds for the Ocular Melanoma Foundation. Our goal is that every rider can bring in about $200 in sponsors. Last year, we well surpassed this goal, with less than 30 riders bringing in over $6,000. If every rider can meet our base goal we can really make a difference for our charity organization. Please help us help this great foundation.
Second, now is a good time to check out your bike. If you haven’t been on it in a while, you might want to take it in to a bike shop and just have it looked at. Make sure that your tires are in good condition, that cables for shifting and braking are working well, and that all parts are properly lubed up. A bike in good working condition can make all the difference.
Third and finally, we really want this to be a fun safe ride. Make sure you have a helmet and feel good about riding. If you can ride some, but not all of the distance, that is fine, there are several options for turning this into a shorter ride. Please don’t push yourself beyond your limits, we want everyone to be safe and have fun.
Looking forward to seeing you all in less than three weeks, and keep up the work on pledges.
LAB Ride participants;
We are really looking forward to this years event on September 24, right here in Washington D.C. We are one month away, and we want to have a really great, safe and fun ride. This means if you haven’t been on your bike in a while, now would be a good time to go out and get some miles in. This years ride is 30 miles. To some that might seem like a really far distance. What I suggest is that make a plan for the last month. Perhaps this weekend, go out for rides of about 10 – 15 miles each day. It will give you a good idea of what it might take to do 30. If you feel great, then excellent. If that felt really hard, then perhaps ride that distance 2 – 3 days next week, with a couple days of rest in between. Each weekday ride, increase the distance just slightly; like an extra lap around to the block, or that extra mile (or 10 minutes) done the lane and back. Then the following weekend try to do a 15 to 20 mile ride. If you take a gradual approach over the next month, with rest in between and rest the day or two before the 24th, then you can likely accomplish a 30 mile spin.
Remember, our ride is not a race, but a family event. We want everyone to have fun, and enjoy the ride. Best to plan a head and get some sample rides in to make it easier on that day. Looking forward to seeing you all.
Kevin: You did a great job on the web site. Julia and I will be sending a donation to OMF. My son Ryan will be riding in the race with his wife Katie. I know this is not really a race. We hope you have a great turnout.
This is a beautiful site…and lavendar is just perfect for LAB. We will be there to help support this cause and in honor of Aunt Leni. We can’t wait to see everyone together again. Awesome…just awesome!
